civil 3d work with multiple point groups in same drawing
In this blog, I'm gonna show yous to build a surface on AutoCAD Civil 3D. In that location are iii unlike things that we're gonna go over for building surfaces.
- Number 1, creating point groups from our existing points in Civil 3D.
- Number 2, mainly cartoon in the break lines between points that we tin add to our surface,
- and number iii, talking about the different styles and representations that your surface tin take, whether you want to add in contours orTIN line.
Nosotros'll get over all of that in this blog. To start, we're going to be importing data from our topographic survey. If you lot don't know how to import your data, I've made a web log describing how to do that and how to change the point style so you have a customized characterization and symbol for every point. Click on the link in the corner, to read that weblog. And then come up back hither, and I'll bear witness you how to use those points to create a surface. As yous can encounter here, I've brought in all the points from the field, and just to make sure that I'm in the right spot, I'chiliad gonna go into the geolocation tab and plough on the aerial map and it looks similar, yes, they're coming in where they should be. Then we're gonna offset out past creating point groups of all the points that are in the project. To do this, you're gonna go into the prospector tab, signal groups, right-click, and select new.
AutoCAD Civil 3D Point Group
And at present you're gonna type in your starting time indicate group, which, for me, I'k gonna start with buildings. I'chiliad gonna get to Include. I'thousand gonna check with raw description matching and for buildings, I utilize the lawmaking BLDG — then I will blazon in BLDG. And it'south always a good exercise to put an asterisk afterward. Remember, an asterisk means that at that place might be something later on the raw description code. So it's to as well include those points. Let's say there's a number after it. Information technology'll all the same include it. Click OK. And now if I were to check in on our signal grouping, we tin run across all of these points that have raw descriptions of BLDG are in this betoken group. I'll repeat the process and I'll add in another point group.
Permit's do concrete shots. Include C asterisk. OK. We'll go again. Permit's do the back of the curb and nosotros'll go to include. Raw clarification. BC. And I'm gonna go ahead and fast forrard here. I've added all of the point groups for my project. The reason we're creating point groups is, we desire to differentiate unlike groups for different points. This will make it easier to distinguish points that have skillful elevations and points that have bad elevations. We don't desire to be including points that have bad elevations into our surface considering it'll ruin our surface. I'll show you lot what happens when nosotros add all of the points and especially the ones that have bad elevations and how we can ruin our surface.
AutoCAD Civil 3D Break Lines
After you've created all of your point groups, the next pace is going to be to create break lines between the points. At present I briefly went over this in a previous weblog virtually line piece of work and how to create different types of lines for your project. So to start drawing brake lines, what y'all're gonna need to do is go into the layers and select the layer that you desire to work with. Let'due south get-go with the back of the adjourn. Now I'thou gonna motion into the dorsum of the curb. And I'chiliad gonna use this imagery in the background, merely to make sure I'm in the ballpark, I'yard drawing in the right place. So I'm gonna blazon in the command 3D poly. It's of import to make sure that y'all're snapping to your points. To do this, you're only gonna select the node pick under the OSnap, that's considered object snap. Y'all can also press F3 on your keyboard and F3 will trigger information technology on and off. So mine is on. I'thousand gonna go to this point. And I'm gonna select all of the points where in that location is a back of curb. As you can see, I've got the back of the curb in. I'chiliad gonna go on working around this project.
All right. Now that I've finished the back of the curb, I'm gonna movement in-out buildings. And then nosotros'll depict in all the building lines. Okay. And and so another one. All right. We got all the buildings in. Next layer, centerline. Information technology'south as unproblematic as just picking the points. Physical. At present, I desire to show you lot an example of drawing in lines but not wanting them to be included on the surface. Here we're missing a line for the driveway and I really wish nosotros had picked upwards this line in the field. For this line, I don't want to use a 3D polyline. I may desire to just use a regular polyline. So I'm gonna just do PL and just draw in this polyline. The reason we don't desire to use a 3D polyline is that we don't know the elevation of this point correct here. We can't gauge what the elevation is cause information technology was never shot in. So the only thing that nosotros can do is visually represent the location of this driveway.
Using a 2D polyline or just a regular polyline will do that just fine. And again, I'm gonna exercise the same thing here. I'm just gonna draw in using a regular polyline. These sidewalks and driveways. So these lines are polylines. But then over hither where I practice accept points, they are 3D polylines with elevations. And I'thousand but gonna go ahead and keep drawing in these 3D polylines. And I call back with that, I have now drawn in all of the 3D polylines for our project.
AutoCAD Ceremonious 3D Surface Creation
All right, now that we've added all the lines and restriction lines for our project, the last thing to practise is to create the surface. To practice this, you're gonna start out by going into the prospector tab and where it says surface, you're gonna correct-click. And select create the surface. I want to brand sure that you have a Tin surface. And let's go ahead and create a layer for our surface. I'one thousand gonna click new. And I'm gonna name this layer SURFACE. And click OK. Make sure that that'south selected. OK. OK. And then you're gonna proper noun your surface — "topo surface" — OK. And now we have our topo surface. The next matter we need to do is add information to our surface. And then you're gonna open up topo surface. You're gonna then open up definitions. And now yous have all these options that you can add together to your surface. We're gonna start with bespeak groups.
Go ahead and click Add. And these are all the signal groups that nosotros created earlier on. I'm gonna select the ones that are applicable to my project. So these are the ones that I want and striking OK. And now I take all the point groups on the surface.
AutoCAD Civil 3D Add together the Suspension Lines
Side by side, nosotros're gonna need to add the pause lines to our project. The easiest mode to practise this is to select a few of the lines that you want to add. And then I want to add together the back of the curb, the gutter, the concrete sidewalk, and the centerline of the road. I'm gonna correct-click and select similar. What select like does is it selects the same exact type of line on the aforementioned type of layer. So if you have a unlike type of line, it will non select it. Or, if y'all take a dissimilar type of layer, it will not select that either. Notice how the 3D polylines from the buildings were not selected, nor were the 2D polylines of the concrete selected. That's because I don't want them to be a part of the surface. Once you've got those lines selected, you're gonna go to break lines. Click add. For description, y'all could just call these restriction lines. Doesn't really matter what y'all write in that location. And then hit OK. And now there are break lines in our surface.
Now, to see the surface, you need to go into the style editor and plough on the brandish of different features of the surface. To practice this, you're gonna right-click on the topo surface and select edit surface style. I similar to plow on the points, the triangles, the edge, the major and the modest contours. Yous tin select what kind of color you desire. And OK. And at present our surface is present and we can see it. This like cyan and bluish color are the contour lines. The white triangle is theTIN line. TIN stands for triangular irregular network considering we're creating a network of triangles using the points for our surface. And the magenta color points are the points that are included inside of our surface. Observe how all of these points that are on the surface are magenta but the edifice points are not. I'll explain why y'all don't desire to add all of the points to the surface.
At present, looking at the surface, there'due south definitely some cleanup for things to happen. The big and obvious i is this bespeak right here, which seems to be creating a giant hole in our surface. To requite you a better perspective, allow me to open up the object viewer. Take a look at this now. You can see a giant hole is existence created for our surface. It's because the elevation of this point is wrong.
So to gear up this, you don't want to merely delete this signal. The reason you don't want to just delete this point is that the horizontal coordinates of the indicate might be fine. You just don't want to include information technology on your surface. If you select the surface, a new ribbon will pop up called the TIN surface menu. If you become over to modify, edit the surface, and delete a point, you can and so delete points out of your surface. So I'm going to select this point and now that point is gone and the surface is a lot cleaner. Some other matter you might detect is that the TIN lines are going all over the place, connecting in areas that they actually shouldn't be connecting, like between these two sidewalks.
To fix this, you're going to demand to delete the TIN lines. Select the surface once again. Become nether edit surface and delete the line. Now you lot can delete these TIN lines out of the surface. So any time you run into a big jump between points, you lot're going to want to make clean that up. That's non supposed to exist happening. And so that looks fine here. All these points look okay. Usually, this is gonna happen around the borders. And then again right here. Similar that'due south bad. You don't want that. I'm going to delete this. Generally, this looks okay now. Yeah, I tin can alive with this.
At present, you may detect that the contours sometimes look really jagged and just very pointy and not very make clean. To prepare this, you're going to correct-click. Click on edit surface styles. And under the contoured tab, you're going to come to contour smoothing, go to true, and and so I like to put this all the way at the max level. Then now my contours are smooth. In this bill of fare, you tin also alter the contour intervals. If yous like one-foot contours, you can exercise one human foot for minor, and five-foot for major. Maybe you want ii-foot contours with ten-foot at major. Information technology all depends on what your kind of style is. I'm gonna go along mine at 1. Hit OK. Every bit yous can see, now the contours look a lot smoother. Something else that looks really strange is how information technology's coming back and forth. When actually this should just exist a continued line.
Autocad-Civil-3d Fixing Swap Edges
What you tin can exercise to fix this is swap the edges of these TIN lines. Select the TIN. Go to edit surface and swap edge. Now you can click on some of these lines and will clean upward the contours so they look a lilliputian more than presentable. I'm just gonna get through here and — I don't like how this is coming out. So yeah, that looks more like how it should be. This. OK. That looks better. Come up hither, take a look. I can clean this upwardly a little chip. OK. That looks skilful. OK. And I think that looks to exist pretty good. I like that more than.
For any queries, you lot can watch the below video.
At present the reason why I made you categorize your points into indicate groups and not simply add them all at once, was, your surface was gonna need a lot more cleanup to do. Permit me show you what information technology would have looked like if you just add all the points at one time. If we just get to point groups, add together, and I just select all points. You're gonna see a crazy network of profile lines that are coming in at the wrong area. The border is extended really far out and it just doesn't look right. It creates a lot more piece of work for you to do. Whereas if you lot simply categorize your points into betoken groups, yous save a lot more time in cleaning up. Await, I cleaned this up in a couple of minutes. Whereas if nosotros did it like this, it would probably accept over an hour. Organizing your work and keeping your points categorized, properly, will save you lot so much fourth dimension in cleanup work. In one case you're satisfied with how your surface looks, you tin then select the surface, and turn off some of these layers. I'm gonna plough off the points, the triangles, and the borders. And then I'm merely gonna leave the profile lines and I'm gonna go ahead and add some labels to my contours. And so I'm gonna go to the comment tab, and I'm gonna click on "add labels." The feature is a surface. The label type is a contoured single. Click OK add and then I tin go in hither and but click on random spots. Add in contours. I can then change how these contours look only for now, I'1000 only gonna add together a bunch of labels to the contours in my drawing. Okay bully. And that's it.
That is how you lot can create a surface using your linework and your points in AutoCAD Civil 3D. I hope you guys enjoyed this blog. If y'all did, be sure to "subscribe" to the weblog.
